Government Launches ‘Finya Computer Itoe Dollar’ Initiative

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has introduced a new training program called ‘Finya Computer Itoe Dollar’, inviting Kenyans aged 18-35 to participate in this free initiative.

Announced through a poster shared on X, the program aims to offer complimentary courses covering various subjects including data entry, digital marketing, virtual assistance, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for graphic design.

Scheduled to commence from March 4 to March 8, 2024, the four-day training will run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Prospective applicants must be Kenyan citizens with proficient computer skills and fall within the age range of 18 to 35.

“The primary goal of the program is to equip young individuals with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes for digital/online work, enabling them to access decent employment opportunities and earn income within the Gig & Freelancing Economy,” stated the ministry.

This initiative follows President William Ruto’s recent comments on bolstering digital employment opportunities in Kenya, which sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans.

“In establishing this ICT hub, I will ensure there are computers available, and I will ensure there is internet access. I have arranged employment for these young people to engage in this work. Your job is twofold… to attend training sessions and to use the computer to earn money,” he remarked in Bungoma County on February 2.

“Are you going to struggle to use a computer to earn money? And if you are unable to use a computer, how can I assist you?” he questioned.
