Kenya Power has announced that its token vending system is facing technical difficulties, leaving customers unable to purchase electricity tokens as usual.
In a statement issued Thursday morning, July 30, 2026, the utility said its technical team was actively working to restore normal service as soon as possible, urging affected customers to keep attempting their purchases in the meantime and apologizing for the inconvenience.

While Kenya Power has not confirmed whether this glitch is connected to the previous night’s nationwide blackout, the timing has left many prepaid customers unable to top up their electricity tokens. The company has not given a timeline for when the vending platform will be fully restored, but has asked for patience as engineers continue working to resolve the issue.
Nationwide Blackout
The latest disruption comes just hours after Kenya Power restored power following a widespread blackout that plunged large parts of the country into darkness on Wednesday night, July 29, 2026. The outage hit Nairobi and several other regions, disrupting homes, businesses, and internet connectivity before electricity was gradually brought back online overnight.

Kenya Power later confirmed that power had been fully restored to most affected areas roughly three hours after the outage began, thanking customers for their patience as technical teams worked through the night.
The blackout first began on the evening of Wednesday, July 29, with Kenya Power issuing its initial alert at 9:05 p.m., confirming a major disruption affecting Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya, and parts of the Central Rift. At the time, sections of the North Rift and Western Kenya remained connected to the grid as engineers launched emergency restoration efforts.
By 10:11 p.m., the company reported that it had successfully re-energized the Lanet, Naivasha, and Juja Road substations, restoring power to parts of Nairobi and the Central Rift as recovery efforts continued through the night.
