Farmers Cautioned Against Early Planting Despite Ongoing Rains

Farmers in Nyeri County have been urged to hold off on planting despite the current rains, as the showers are temporary and not sufficient to sustain crops.

According to Nyeri County Director of Meteorological Services, John Muiruri, the rains experienced since Saturday are short-lived and will only last a few days. He warned that planting now could result in crop losses once the showers end.

“We are experiencing brief rains that may last about four days. This is not the right time to plant, unless it’s fast-maturing and drought-tolerant crops,” Muiruri explained.

The region has also been experiencing extremely cold conditions, with temperatures dropping to between 9°C and 12°C in Nyeri, Nyahururu, Kangema, Embu, and Thika, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

A recent advisory issued on August 15 indicated that heavy rains were expected in several parts of the country, including the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley. The weatherman projected the downpour to intensify between August 17 and 19 before easing from August 20.

The forecast placed the likelihood of rainfall between 33% and 66% and warned of potential flash floods and poor visibility in the affected areas.

Residents, especially those living near rivers and flood-prone zones, have been advised to remain alert, avoid crossing moving water, and stay away from open fields or trees during storms to reduce risks of flooding and lightning strikes.
