Jimi Wanjigi, a businessman-turned-politician, has refuted claims that he refused to hand over his firearms as required by the State.
In a clarification posted on X, Wanjigi explained that a 2018 court ruling invalidated the Firearms Licensing Board’s decision to revoke his firearms certificate, number 5922. This court decision was made in response to a petition from 2017.
Wanjigi further stated that in November 2022, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) instructed the DCI to comply with the court orders regarding his firearms, but this instruction has not been followed.
This clarification followed State House official Dennis Itumbi’s denial of allegations that Wanjigi’s arrest was related to the Nane Nane protests.
Itumbi clarified that the arrest was connected to the revocation of Wanjigi’s firearms license by the Firearms Licensing Board.
Itumbi shared a letter from Rashid Yakub, head of the Firearms Licensing Board, which notified Wanjigi of the revocation of his firearms certificate.
The letter, dated July 30, 2024, cited legal provisions and demanded that Wanjigi surrender both his firearm certificate and the firearms within fourteen days.
Despite obtaining a court order to prevent his arrest, Wanjigi was detained at Kamukunji Police Station on Monday. He had been summoned to provide a statement at the Nairobi Area DCI offices and was arrested upon arrival with his legal team around 2 pm.
