In Mandera County, a security alert was triggered on Thursday as unidentified gunmen targeted and destroyed the Fincharo Safaricom communication mast. Around 4 am, the assailants used various explosives to damage the mast, including the generator, fuel tank, and solar panels.
The attackers, whose number remains unknown, launched the assault on the facility, prompting National Police Reserve personnel in the vicinity to hastily retreat for their safety. Local residents are now urging heightened security measures and the prompt restoration of the facility to return to normalcy.
Upon visiting the scene several hours later, the police reported that no arrests had been made. They also criticized locals for not collaborating with authorities to curb such attacks, which appear to be resurfacing after a brief period of calm.
This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks in the area. It occurred amidst an ongoing operation against a terror group by multi-agency teams. Concerns are rising about the possibility of more such assaults, especially following the reported crossing of dozens of militants from Somalia into Kenya along the Garissa border.
The affected region, situated near the Kenya-Somalia border, has experienced an upswing in al-Shabab attacks, often with the assistance of local collaborators. This has had a detrimental impact on overall development, leading many non-local teachers and civil servants to flee the area out of fear for their safety.
Notably, on December 28, 2023, another gang targeted and destroyed a communication mast in Dasheg area, Wajir County, using bombs. This act disrupted communication in the region. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the National Police Reservists guarding the mast. The police are actively pursuing leads related to the activities of the involved gang.
