Protesting against a surge in metal theft incidents, traders at Kyua market in Kitui are calling for the expulsion of scrap metal dealers from the town. The aggrieved traders brought the bustling Kitui-Machakos road to a standstill on Thursday, causing hours of disruption.
This outcry follows the recent arrest of a group of scrap metal dealers and the subsequent impounding of a lorry transporting scrap metal. Despite a court order for the release of the vehicle, tensions remain high among the traders.
Expressing frustration, one trader stated, “We are tired of being robbed, only to find scrap metal dealers selling our items. We are holding protests to ensure these rogue dealers leave the town and stop abetting crime.”
Attempting to address the concerns of Kyua market traders, Matuu OCS Peter Mugambi and Katangi OCS Charles Itharii assured them that appropriate measures would be taken against those involved in the scrap metal trade, emphasizing a commitment to curbing criminal activities.
