Acting ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has clarified that Cabinet Secretaries John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi no longer speak for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on political matters, saying their roles in government align them with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Speaking on Sunday, Oburu stated that while both leaders have strong ties to the party, they cannot be considered ODM spokespersons since they serve under President William Ruto.

“Those who are in government like John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi are part of the administration. They are not speaking for our party — the president is their boss,” Oburu said.
He added that by accepting government appointments, the two effectively resigned from active party leadership roles.
“They had to leave their positions in ODM to join government,” he explained.
Oburu maintained that ODM’s political direction remains clear and consistent, contrary to claims that the party lacks focus ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Our position is intact. When the time comes, discussions on either pre-election or post-election coalitions will take place,” he affirmed.
He further emphasized that ODM continues to work with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) under a bipartisan framework guided by a shared 10-point agenda.
“We are still part of this broad-based arrangement with UDA, focusing on the agreed issues. We haven’t shifted or declared anything beyond that,” he noted.
His comments come amid speculation about ODM’s future following the death of its leader, Raila Odinga, and internal disagreements arising from conflicting statements by senior members.
Oburu also defended Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, affirming that his statements reflect ODM’s official position.
“When Sifuna speaks, that is the correct position of the party. He is not isolated,” Oburu said during an NTV interview.
He dismissed calls from a section of members seeking Sifuna’s removal as secretary general, stressing that the party should be focused on unity, not division.
“This is the time to strengthen the party, not to fight one another. Sifuna is doing a good job and remains an important member of ODM,” Oburu concluded.
