How will Government minimize Cheating in Exams?

By: Linet Mutheu

Since the national exams began this October, many Kenyans have been asking how the government is working to minimize cheating in exams — a question that still remains unanswered.

Over the years, there have been numerous cases of candidates being caught cheating in their exams. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) 2024 was mentioned in connection with several cheating incidents, as evidenced by candidates found with mobile phones in examination rooms.

The Council took action by penalizing all candidates involved, a move that many felt was unfair since not everyone had cheated. The Council also introduced new rules for future exams, including employing more supervisors and deploying additional police officers at every examination center.

As the 2025 KCSE exams approach, Kenyans are wondering whether similar cases will occur again. The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, has instructed teachers to adequately prepare students and warned that no exam cheating cases will be tolerated.

However, questions still linger: if some students are caught cheating, what will happen? Will all candidates be penalized, or will only those directly involved face disciplinary action?
