SHA Issues Urgent Alert As Fraud Cases Spike Nationwide

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has issued a warning to the public about fraudsters posing as its staff and defrauding unsuspecting Kenyans seeking to register for or access SHA services.

In a public notice dated November 6, 2025, the authority expressed concern over a growing number of scams in which criminals claim they can expedite registration or service delivery for a fee.

SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the authority is “deeply concerned and saddened” that members of the public have been tricked by individuals pretending to be SHA employees.

“It pains us that dishonest people would exploit the trust Kenyans have in our staff for their own selfish gain,” the statement read.

The authority clarified that all SHA services are free and that no employee or representative is authorised to request payment for registration, updates, or assistance. It also warned Kenyans not to disclose personal details such as M-Pesa PINs to anyone.

Members of the public were urged to report suspected fraudsters to the police or directly to SHA via hotline 147 or email fraud@sha.go.ke.

“Your safety, dignity, and confidence in our healthcare system matter deeply to us,” SHA stated, adding that it is working to protect the public from such fraudulent activities.

The agency reiterated that registration can be done for free through USSD code *147#, or on the official websites www.afyayangu.go.ke and www.sha.go.ke. Assisted registration is only available through authorised offices such as county offices, Huduma Centres, and certified Community Health Promoters wearing branded uniforms.

SHA emphasised that contributions should only be paid through the official M-Pesa business number 200222 or through banks formally listed by the authority.

Kenyans were also cautioned against sharing their phones or PINs with anyone claiming to assist in registration.

Dr. Mwangangi urged the public to ignore and report individuals demanding money or presenting themselves as SHA representatives outside the official communication channels.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency, safety, and integrity in the implementation of the social health insurance programme.
