Makueni County is mourning the sudden passing of Dr. Sonia Nzilani, the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture and Tourism.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior confirmed her death in a statement released on Saturday, November 22, 2025, revealing that she was discovered unresponsive in her home earlier that day.

He described her death as a major loss to the county and to the many people she served.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of Dr. Sonia Nzilani, who was found unresponsive at her home today. Until her untimely passing, she served with dedication and distinction as the CEC for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture & Tourism,” the statement read.
The county highlighted her outstanding work as an environmental enthusiast, noting that she was widely admired for championing conservation, especially tree planting.
Her strong environmental advocacy earned her the nickname “Syomiti” among residents—a reflection of the impact she made across Makueni and beyond.
“Her commitment to public service and her passion for the growth of our county will be greatly missed. She was a dedicated environmentalist who promoted tree growing tirelessly, earning the affectionate name ‘Syomiti’ from the public,” the county noted.
At the time of her passing, Dr. Nzilani was a key member of Governor Mutula’s administration, overseeing trade development, marketing, industrial advancement, cultural initiatives and tourism.
Her colleagues remembered her as a principled, hardworking leader deeply committed to Makueni’s social and economic progress.
The county said updates regarding her passing would be shared in due course.
Governor Mutula also urged the public to support the family and respect their need for privacy as they grieve.
“Let us stand with them and give them the peace and space they need. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.
