Google Lifts Ban on Using AI for Weapons Development

Google’s parent company has lifted a ban on artificial intelligence (AI) being used in the development of weapons and surveillance tools after changing its long-standing rules.

It has rewritten its guidelines for how it will use AI, dropping a section that previously excluded apps that are “likely to cause harm”.

His written message at Google defended the change, saying that businesses and democratic governments needed to work together on AI that “supports national security”.

It said: “We believe democracy should be a priority in the development of AI, guided by fundamental values such as freedom, equality and respect for human rights.

“And we believe that companies, governments and organizations that share these values should work together to create AI that protects people, drives global growth and supports national security,” it added.

There is debate among AI experts about how powerful new technology should be regulated in general, to what extent commercial interests should be allowed to determine its direction, and how best to protect against risks to humanity as a whole.

There is also controversy about the use of AI on the battlefield and in surveillance technologies.

Awareness of the military potential of AI has increased recently.

In January, the MP said that the conflict in Ukraine had shown that the technology “is a huge help to the military on the battlefield”.
