Lenana School Denies Grade 10 Bullying Allegations

Lenana School has denied social media allegations that Grade 10 students are being bullied by senior learners, stating that internal investigations found no verified reports of abuse at the institution.

The claims surfaced in mid-January, shortly after Grade 10 learners began school on January 12. This group is the first cohort under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, transitioning into senior school alongside Form Three and Form Four students, the final classes under the outgoing 8-4-4 system.

The allegations gained traction online after Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai shared a message from a concerned parent, which claimed that Form Four students were allegedly beating younger learners with belts across the school compound, dormitories, classrooms, dining areas, and sports fields.

The message suggested that some students had already transferred within two weeks to escape the alleged abuse and claimed that the school administration was struggling to address the situation.

The parent described the bullying as “traumatising” and “almost assault,” alleging that some prefects were involved and that senior students’ frustrations were being taken out on Grade 10 learners.

In a formal response dated January 23 to the Nairobi Regional Director of Education, Lenana School Chief Principal William Kemei said the school acted promptly after the claims emerged, finding no evidence to support them.

“I acknowledge receipt of allegations circulating on social media regarding alleged bullying of Grade 10 learners by senior students at Lenana School,” the principal stated in his letter.

He said an urgent meeting was held with deputy principals overseeing administration and boarding, along with senior house masters, who confirmed no bullying cases had been reported within the houses.

Following the meeting, house masters conducted additional sessions with students to verify facts, reassure learners, and reinforce discipline and harmony. Class teachers and house masters also held structured engagements for counselling, support, and guidance on expected conduct.

Kemei further met with senior prefects and house captains, who confirmed that no formal reports of bullying had been raised through student leadership channels.

The principal addressed the entire school during an assembly, reiterating the school’s zero-tolerance policy on bullying and emphasizing the importance of dignity, non-discrimination, and immediate reporting of any physical, emotional, or psychological abuse.

CCTV footage from selected houses was also reviewed, with no unusual or concerning activity observed. The Parents Association leadership was briefed, and no parents had formally reported any bullying incidents involving their children.

Kemei stressed that Lenana School takes all matters of learner safety seriously and remains committed to a supportive, values-based environment. He said the school will continue enhancing guidance and counselling services, supervision, and confidential reporting channels to ensure any emerging cases are promptly addressed.

Lenana School, a leading national boys’ boarding school in Karen, Nairobi, is renowned for its academic excellence, extensive facilities, and long-standing culture of discipline. The principal noted that the school will continue monitoring the situation and provide further reports if new information emerges.
