Maine was arrested after the owner of Oasis Bar accused him of causing disorder by opening a door and allowing patrons to leave without paying. The bar owner demanded Ksh 20,000 for damages, which the family could not pay.
A friend intervened, negotiating with the Officer in Charge (OCS) for Maingi’s release on the condition that he report back to the station.
According to his elder brother, Julius Mwau, Maingi was found unconscious when picked up from the station. He remained unresponsive and refused food for 12 hours before being taken to Kilungu Sub-county Hospital for treatment.
Maingi was later referred to Machakos Level Five Hospital, but the family chose Kenyatta National Hospital. Unable to secure admission there, they opted for a private facility, where a head scan revealed a blood clot. He was given medication and advised to return after a few days.
On January 21, his condition deteriorated, and he was rushed back to Kilungu Sub-county Hospital, where he later died.

The family is now demanding answers regarding what happened while Maingi was at Nunguni police station and why the station refused to provide his mother, Ruth Mwau, with an occurrence book number. They are urging government authorities to investigate and hold accountable anyone responsible for his treatment.
Reports indicate that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already launched an investigation, with several individuals providing statements.
Kilungu Sub-county Police Commander Patrick Muthengi denied claims that officers assaulted Maingi, stating that ongoing investigations and a postmortem will determine the cause of death.
Maingi’s body remains at Kilungu Sub-county Hospital morgue pending postmortem examination.
