Tips for Coping with the Current Nairobi Heatwave

The recent declaration by the World Meteorological Organisation, identifying the past month as the hottest January on record, has raised concerns about whether Nairobi is currently experiencing heatwaves.

The intense sun over the past few weeks has prompted many Kenyans to voice their discomfort with the high temperatures online.

“You guys feeling this heat? Nairobi is an oven. Been taking cold showers but still sweating like hell at night,” remarked one user, Dennis Kioko.

“The sun rays hitting the ground in Nairobi are something else… The worst is heat during the day and the worst heat during the night!” added another Kenyan user, Juma G.

Here are five strategies to help you cope with the Nairobi heat:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Increase your water intake and keep a bottle with you as a reminder to stay hydrated. The body loses significant water in hot temperatures, and having water on hand serves as a visual prompt to drink more.
  2. Avoid Alcohol: Alcoholic drinks are diuretic, increasing urine production and contributing to dehydration. Especially in hot weather, where fluid loss through sweating is already high, alcohol consumption exacerbates dehydration.
  3. Dress Lightly: Opt for loose, lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. These materials allow for better airflow and moisture evaporation, keeping you cooler in hot weather.
  4. Take Cool Showers: Refresh yourself with cool showers, but avoid using extremely cold water, which can be too shocking for the system. Moderate temperature water is more suitable for cooling off.
  5. Protect Your Skin and Eat Hydrating Foods: Use sunscreen to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, and incorporate hydrating foods into your diet. Foods with high water content, such as cucumbers, watermelons, tomatoes, spinach, and cabbage, help maintain hydration levels.

As you adapt to the current hot weather, consider implementing these strategies to stay comfortable. The Kenya Meteorological Department has also issued warnings of temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in various counties, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for fluctuating weather conditions.
