The United Nations officially recognised International Women’s Day in 1977, which helped expand its recognition and celebration across the globe.

Today, the day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the progress made in advancing women’s empowerment while also highlighting the challenges that continue to limit women’s rights and participation in many parts of the world.

Governments, organisations and communities use the occasion to promote initiatives, policies and programmes aimed at advancing gender equality and supporting the development of women and girls.
