Nyamira: Missing Medical Officer Found Dead in Shallow Grave

Police in Nyamira have confirmed that a body discovered in a shallow grave in Nyamauro Village belongs to a medical officer who went missing last month.

The remains, recovered from a shallow pit in Nyakenimo Sub-location, were identified as those of 41-year-old Duke Nyang’au Obasancho, who was first reported missing on February 23, 2026. Identification was carried out by the National Registration Bureau (NRB), marking a key development in the investigation.

Obasancho, originally from Manga Sub-county, Kemera Location in Nyamira County, was serving as a Medical Superintendent and Community Health Nursing Officer at Nyamusi Sub-County Hospital at the time of his disappearance. Early reports indicate the body had a penetrating neck wound.

Investigators suspect he was murdered and buried in secret. The remains are currently at Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Police have launched an intensified investigation, treating the case as a suspected homicide. Authorities are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death and identify those responsible.

The incident has raised concern among residents and healthcare workers due to the victim’s prominent role in the local health sector. The motive for the killing remains unknown, and while police say they are following promising leads, no arrests have yet been made.

Separately, a family in Kirinyaga County is mourning the death of a three-year-old boy who drowned in River Murubara, Mwea East Sub-County. The child went missing around 9:30 a.m. on March 23, 2026, while under his grandmother’s care as his parents were away for casual work. A search led to the discovery of his body, with an autopsy planned to confirm the cause of death.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season, as swollen rivers continue to pose serious risks to children and nearby communities.
