Do Kenyans Pay for Digital Content? Survey Reveals the Answer

Kenya’s move toward digital subscriptions faces a major challenge, as over half of the population still prefers free content over paid services.

According to a recent survey by the Media Council of Kenya, 54.2% of respondents said they do not pay for digital content. This reluctance is linked to several economic and structural factors.

One key reason is the widespread availability of free alternatives, which makes it difficult for users to shift to subscription-based news and entertainment. Affordability is another barrier, with many people weighing the cost of digital content against essential daily expenses.

Some users also question the value of digital content, opting instead to rely on social media or traditional broadcast platforms for their information needs.

Yet, trends among younger Kenyans suggest a potential change. The survey found that 45.8% of respondents do pay for digital content, with the highest adoption among 25–34-year-olds—tech-savvy users more familiar with global streaming and subscription services.
