AA Kenya Launches Upgraded International Driving Permit to Curb Forgery

The Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) has introduced an upgraded International Driving Permit (IDP) that enables Kenyan drivers to legally operate vehicles in over 150 countries without taking local driving tests.

The move comes amid rising cases of Kenyan motorists facing legal action abroad for carrying counterfeit driving permits.

“In recent years, many Kenyans have been arrested overseas for possessing fake IDPs, which international authorities consider forgery,” said Francis Theuri, CEO of AA Kenya.

He added that the new IDP is tamper-proof, incorporates advanced security features, and is digital, allowing Interpol to verify it online without contacting AA Kenya directly.

Developed in collaboration with the International Automobile Federation (FIA), AA Dubai, and the UK, the IDP translates a valid Kenyan driving licence into multiple international languages. This facilitates vehicle rentals abroad and allows insurance companies to confirm coverage for foreign drivers.

With the government promoting international travel and work opportunities, the IDP is expected to help Kenyans, especially youth, access jobs that involve driving abroad.

“This initiative highlights AA Kenya’s commitment to supporting drivers as they transition from local to global mobility,” Theuri said. “Through quality driver training and internationally recognised certification, we empower Kenyan motorists to demonstrate their skills worldwide.”
