Nairobi, May 8, 2024 – The Kenyan government has officially declared Friday, May 10, as a public holiday to commemorate both National Tree Growing Day and to honor the victims of the devastating floods that have ravaged the nation in recent months.
According to a notice seen by The Lower Eastern Times the decision to designate May 10 as a public holiday was made to pay tribute to the lives lost during the floods and to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
Government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, had earlier announced on his official account that a gazette notice would be issued to formalize the holiday.
He also indicated that Hon. Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Forestry & Climate Change, would hold a press conference to provide further details on the day’s significance and activities.
The declaration of May 10 as a public holiday serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges and mitigate the impact of natural disasters on communities across Kenya.
