Strike Notice Issued by Junior Secondary School Teachers

Intern teachers at Junior Secondary Schools have formally notified the government of their intention to strike, demanding permanent employment with pension benefits.

The announcement came during a peaceful demonstration held in Kilifi on May 6, 2024. The teachers, representing a significant number of interns, voiced grievances against the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), alleging mistreatment and violations of their rights.

Azani Ngumbao, one of the interns, highlighted their primary request for confirmation of employment status and compensation for their internship tenure. He emphasized the inadequacy of the current monthly gross salary of Ksh20,000, particularly when considering tax deductions comparable to those of permanent staff.

Furthermore, Ngumbao stressed the necessity for the TSC to adhere to a recent court ruling that deemed their internship program unlawful. This ruling determined that assigning internship roles to qualified teachers with licenses encroached upon their entitlement to fair labor practices.

Additionally, Ngumbao revealed that over 1,200 Junior Secondary School teachers in the county are prepared to abstain from work once the second term of 2024 commences.

Andrew Lelei, another intern teacher, underscored the detrimental impact of neglecting the teachers’ demands on the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). He lamented the exploitation of interns to promote the CBC initiative while excluding them from official payroll arrangements.

Lelei also criticized certain Members of Parliament for prioritizing recent graduates in employment distribution, neglecting older graduates still seeking permanent positions.
