Moi University Lecturers Announce Strike Over Salary Delays

Moi University lecturers are set to go on strike from Wednesday to protest unpaid salaries.

The industrial action comes after the lapse of a seven-day strike notice issued by the University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) on August 12.

Uasu’s chapter organising secretary, Nyabuta Ojuki, urged staff to participate in the walkout, saying the decision followed “long and careful consideration of our welfare as members of the academic staff.”

“We call on you to step forward and make your voice heard. Join us on Wednesday, August 20, 2025,” he said.

In a statement, the university sought to reassure students, parents, and the public that operations would continue despite the looming strike.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut acknowledged the concerns but said management was committed to maintaining academic programmes and quality education.

“The university recognises the issues raised by Uasu. The Council and management are in talks with union leaders, the Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders to find a solution through dialogue,” Prof. Kotut stated.

He expressed optimism that negotiations would bear fruit and stressed the importance of addressing staff concerns while ensuring teaching, examinations, and research continue without disruption. Preparations for first-year students reporting on Thursday, August 21, 2025, will go on as scheduled.

The union is demanding payment of June and July salaries in line with the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement, and full implementation of the Return-to-Work Formula signed with the University Council on November 30, 2024.

Uasu is also pushing for compliance with agreed terms on staff promotions, reviews, and retirement age.
