The 14-seater matatu was travelling from Mandera town to Arabia town when it came under attack at Beer-Awayon village.

Emergency responders rushed the injured passengers to Mandera Referral Hospital for treatment.

Authorities are yet to disclose the identities of the victims who died in the attack.

The region is located near the Kenya-Somalia border, an area that has repeatedly experienced incursions by suspected al-Shabaab fighters.

In a separate incident, authorities said a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated along the Elwak–Eresuki road in Mandera County in what is believed to have been an attempted attack targeting security officers.

The officers were reportedly providing security for a government infrastructure project.

Police stated that the explosion occurred on Thursday morning, May 7, near a borrow pit where marram is being sourced for the Horn of Africa Gateway Project.

A joint security team drawn from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service (NPS) visited the site and confirmed that a directional IED had exploded along the road.

No casualties or injuries were reported in that incident.

Security agencies have since heightened operations in the area as investigations continue into the attacks.
