Yvonne Okwara Concedes KEG Presidential Race to Zubeida Kananu

Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara has accepted defeat in the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG) presidential election, where she lost to Zubeida Kananu of the Standard Group.

In a statement following the announcement of the results, Okwara acknowledged the outcome, expressing pride in the campaign her team ran despite the loss.

“Today, I graciously concede the KEG presidential election, fully respecting the democratic decision of our members. While I had hoped for a different result, I am proud of the values we championed — renewal, integrity, and shared vision,” she stated.

She emphasized that her candidacy was about more than just winning; it was about revitalizing journalistic standards and safeguarding the guild’s collective future.

Okwara also extended her congratulations to the incoming leadership, urging them to prioritize unity and rebuild trust within the organization.

“To the new team, I offer my heartfelt congratulations. You carry a significant responsibility — to bring the Guild together and restore faith in its mission. I wish you wisdom and strength in the journey ahead,” she added.

Okwara thanked her supporters, reaffirming her commitment to the principles that motivated her campaign, including transparency and editorial independence.

In the closely contested virtual election held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, Kananu retained her seat with 72 votes, while Okwara secured 58. Kananu will serve alongside Francis Openda as her deputy.

Other elected officials include Agnes Mwangangi (Radio), Julius Bosire (Academia), Mildred Awuor (Television), Linda Bach (Print), and Kenfrey Kiberenge (Digital). Trustees elected were Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a.
