The confrontation occurred in Malala’s home county as he toured the region alongside Nyandarua Senator Methu Muhia, Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, and other DCP officials.

Videos shared on social media show the DCP convoy entering Kakamega town, trailed by enthusiastic supporters, only to encounter a police blockade. Police responded by firing teargas, causing the crowd to scatter.

In a statement following the incident, DCP leaders condemned the police action, vowing that no form of intimidation would deter their mission to “liberate the country.” Malala accused law enforcement of using live ammunition against what he described as a peaceful gathering.

“I vehemently denounce the excessive force, use of live rounds, and unwarranted teargas by our security forces against citizens merely welcoming their leader,” Malala stated. “Kenya is a country governed by the rule of law, and such actions have no place in a democratic society.”

The tour marks DCP’s first major activity in the western region ahead of the party’s official launch scheduled for June 3, 2025. The DCP is spearheaded by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

On May 15, Gachagua introduced the party’s interim officials as part of his preparations for the 2027 general elections. Among the key figures named were former UDA and Jubilee leaders.

Cleophas Malala was appointed deputy party leader, while ex-Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi was named interim National Organising Secretary. Former Starehe MP will lead the caucus of eminent persons.

Other interim officials include:

  • Catherine Waruguru (National Women Leader)
  • David Mingati (National Chairperson)
  • Peter Mwathi (Deputy Chairperson, Strategy – Kiambu)
  • Margaret Sarah Owino (Deputy Chairperson, Operations – Kisumu)
  • Wanjiku Thiga (National Youth Leader)
  • Hezron Obanga (Interim Secretary General – Kisii)
  • Martin Kamwaro (Deputy Secretary General – Narok)
  • Anne Mutua (National Treasurer – Machakos)
  • Wambiru Njoka (Deputy Treasurer, Strategy)
  • Thomas Mwita (Deputy National Treasurer, Operations)
