Trailer Driver Feared Dead in Nairobi–Mombasa Highway Crash

One person is feared dead following a road accident along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway after a trailer driver reportedly lost control near Salama Market in Makueni County on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses said the driver died at the scene in an incident that involved four trailers.

Reports indicate that a trailer heading from Nairobi towards Mombasa overturned after the driver attempted to avoid a bodaboda rider who was joining the highway near Kiu Hill slope, heading toward Kiu. The sudden maneuver is believed to have caused the driver to lose control.

The trailer is said to have collided with three other trucks coming from the opposite direction, leading to a multi-vehicle crash.

The driver of the trailer is believed to have died on the spot.

The accident caused a major traffic jam along the busy highway as emergency responders and police secured the scene.

Officers later arrived, documented the incident, and moved the body to the mortuary. Traffic flow was later restored.

The crash comes just days after another deadly accident on the same highway, where two people died and 12 others were injured in a collision involving a matatu and a stationary trailer at Katani in Machakos County.

According to Athi River East Sub-County Police Commander Anderson Mbae, the earlier accident occurred when a matatu heading towards Mombasa crashed into a parked trailer at the Total area in Katani around 12:10 am.

Police said the matatu, carrying 16 passengers, hit the trailer that had stalled on the road without warning signs, resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries.

The injured victims suffered head cuts, broken limbs, and chest injuries, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary pending identification and post-mortem.

Investigations into both accidents are ongoing.
