Tragic Incident at JKUAT Hostel as Student Takes His Own Life

In a tragic turn of events, a first-year student enrolled in Computer Science at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) ended his life on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

The young student took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of a hostel building on the university campus.

Efforts to rescue the student, whose identity has not been disclosed, proved futile according to reports. His demise was confirmed by family members after his body was transferred to the Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination through an autopsy.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police suggest that the student was grappling with disappointment after failing to secure a scholarship at a university in the United States.

Fellow classmates revealed to authorities that the deceased had been experiencing depression after missing out on the opportunity to study abroad. It was also noted that he had applied for a visa while awaiting a response from the institution.

Tragically, the student took his life shortly after receiving a rejection letter regarding his scholarship application, despite efforts from his father to console and encourage him during a recent visit to campus. The incident occurred soon after his father departed from the hostel.

Timothy Gitonga, the Secretary General of the Jomo Kenyatta University Student Association (JKUSA), expressed sorrow over the loss, stating, “It is on a sad note I have to announce the death of one of our students. Let’s pray for the family. It is a sad day for us.”

This tragic event adds to a concerning trend of university students in the country resorting to suicide. Just two days prior, a 19-year-old first-year student from Kericho County took her own life at her parent’s residence after allegedly being abandoned by her boyfriend.

Similarly, on March 28, 2024, a student from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa ended his life in Nairobi after losing his school fees in a betting scheme.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), leading causes of suicide include depression, relationship issues, financial struggles, discrimination, illness, stress, and loneliness, shedding light on the complex factors contributing to these devastating incidents.
