In a startling turn of events, two men residing in Kipsapta village, Kuresoi North, Nakuru County, have opted to swap their wives following allegations of infidelity within their marriages.
The unconventional resolution has left the local community in disbelief, prompting questions about the motivations behind such an agreement between the two husbands.
Expressing concern over the incident, village elders and administrative officials have denounced the practice, denigrating it as a demeaning act towards women within the community.
Taking action in response to the situation, Nyumba Kumi chairperson David Rono convened a meeting on Saturday, March 30, 2024, to address the marital disputes involving the two couples in the village.
During the meeting, Rono strongly condemned the actions of the husbands, asserting that spouse-swapping is unacceptable within their cultural norms, particularly among the Kalenjin community.
Emphasizing the need for a swift resolution, Rono announced plans for a follow-up meeting scheduled for April 1, aimed at mediating between the two couples and charting a path forward.
The saga unfolded when Robert Kirui’s wife disappeared after a disagreement, later discovered to have absconded with another man, leaving behind their two daughters. Despite Kirui’s attempts to reconcile with his spouse through community mediation, his efforts proved futile.
In response to his wife’s departure, Kirui sought retribution by engaging in a tit-for-tat exchange with the husband of the woman involved in the affair, citing mutual marital strife as the catalyst for their agreement.
However, village elders have expressed apprehension over the potential repercussions of such actions, warning of possible social discord within the community.
In the midst of the upheaval, both sets of wives, each with two daughters under the age of 10, have agreed to relocate, leaving their children in the care of their respective fathers.
