Five Arrested as DCI Initiates Operation to Combat City Thugs

Nairobi regional detectives have launched an operation aimed at dismantling the reign of city thugs notorious for stealing from locked vehicles. In a recent development, law enforcement officers have apprehended five suspects believed to have stolen Ksh 900,000 and USD 15,000 from a businessman residing in Nairobi’s South C area just two weeks ago.

The victim, distressed by the incident, reported to Akila Police Station in Lang’ata, revealing that he had parked his BMW X1 on Muhoho Road opposite Rubis Petrol Station. Upon returning from an auto parts shop, he discovered a smashed rear window and the disappearance of a bag containing the money, along with his bank cards, national ID, smart driving license, and work-related documents.

Following the theft, unauthorized withdrawals totaling Ksh 80,000 were made from his bank accounts via ATMs in Embakasi. The Nairobi regional Crime Research team, with support from the Operations Unit, initiated a forensic-led investigation into the suspects.

The detectives identified Charles Nzomo as the primary suspect, captured by nearby CCTV footage breaking into the victim’s vehicle. The footage also revealed Paul Mukungi and Vincent Juma Raguma acting as lookouts while Nzomo utilized a catapult to smash the car window. Meanwhile, Jane Mueni Mutinda was observed tailing the victim, with Shaban Rashid Maingi waiting in a Mazda Demio getaway vehicle fitted with registration plates from a Subaru car.

The suspects were apprehended one by one on Friday night, with Nzomo’s vehicle traced to Tsavo Gardens. Inside, the victim’s KCB ATM card and car-breaking tools, including a catapult, were recovered. The suspects are currently detained at DCI Lang’ata offices pending further investigation.

Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend a sixth accomplice, Rodgers Ndung’u, who fled to Mombasa. Detectives suspect that this syndicate may be connected to four individuals arrested on February 16 of the previous year for similar car break-ins in South C, Nairobi.
