Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, has been particularly affected by the persistent downpour, with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall. The Ministry of Environment has warned of potential flooding in low-lying and urban areas, as well as the risk of landslides in steep terrain.

The adverse weather has resulted in a grim toll, with 219 fatalities reported thus far, including nine in the past 24 hours. Additionally, 164 individuals have sustained injuries, while 72 remain missing. The displacement of 41,248 households, affecting around 206,240 people, has prompted the establishment of 115 camps across 19 counties, accommodating 27,856 individuals.

Notably, the heavy rains have disrupted education, with 1,967 schools affected by flooding. In response, President William Ruto has announced the postponement of the scheduled reopening of schools, initially slated for May 6, until further notice. This decision follows the earlier deferment from April 29 due to the prevailing weather conditions.
