Ruai Police Base Commander Drowns in Machakos Floods

A tragic event unfolded on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, as the commander of a police base in Ruai, Cyprian Walunya Kasili, lost his life when his car was swept away by flooding in Machakos County.

The incident occurred near River Kware in Matungulu, where concerned citizens spotted the submerged vehicle around 4:30 pm and alerted the authorities.

Despite efforts by the police to retrieve the vehicle, Commander Kasili could not be saved. He was en route to his home in Lowland estate at the time of the accident.

While rescue teams work to recover the vehicle from the river, Commander Kasili’s body has been taken to Patjud funeral home for autopsy.

This tragic event adds to the toll of 188 deaths caused by heavy rains and floods in the country, with 90 individuals still missing.

As part of the response efforts, the government is evaluating the condition of all dams, with support from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the ongoing rescue operations in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County
