Televangelist David ‘Gakuyo’ Ngare Summoned to DCI Headquarters for Questioning

David Kariuki Ngare, popularly known as Gakuyo, a televangelist and the founder of Ekeza Sacco, has been escorted to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters at Mazingira Building, where he is undergoing questioning in preparation for potential prosecution.

According to DCI officials familiar with the investigation, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has granted permission to charge Gakuyo with various offenses, including fraud.

This case is one of 12 investigations initiated by the DCI regarding transactions involving Gakuyo and some individuals in Kiambu.

An officer involved in the matter stated, “We had 12 files, each containing 25 complaints. Only one file has received authorization for charges against him, which is why he was detained.”

Gakuyo is expected to appear in court on Thursday to face these charges. The officer mentioned that additional charges might be brought against him as other investigation files receive authorization for prosecution.

Earlier, Gakuyo was detained by police at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as he attempted to leave the country.

In a video statement, Gakuyo attributed his detention to undisclosed political figures seeking revenge against him.

“They have barred me from leaving the country. I am currently at JKIA. I believe this is a form of retaliation. I am glad that I will have the opportunity to appear before a judge and learn about the charges against me. Currently, I am at the DCI airport,” Gakuyo stated in the video.

Gakuyo has been under police scrutiny for allegedly misappropriating over Sh1 billion from members of his Ekeza Sacco. Although he has negotiated a repayment plan with the claimants, police continue to investigate the matter.
