Senegal Frees Hundreds of Political Detainees

By: BBC

Aissata Tall Sall, Senegal’s Justice Minister, has declared the liberation of close to 400 demonstrators who were incarcerated during political protests in March 2021 and June 2023.

Ms. Sall did not specify whether prominent figures like opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and presidential candidate Bachirou Diomaye Faye would be included in the release.

“This is not a blanket release; each case is individually assessed based on the evidence presented,” she clarified.

The minister emphasized that the decision to release the political detainees aimed at calming tensions within the nation.

Political unrest in Senegal frequently leads to arrests and casualties.

Recently, three individuals lost their lives amid demonstrations following the annulment of the country’s 25th February elections.

The justice minister affirmed that investigations were ongoing to identify those accountable for the incidents.
