Rigathi Gachagua has responded to President William Ruto’s accusation of tribalism directed at the Mt. Kenya region, asserting that the region’s support for Ruto in 2022 proves their commitment to nationalism, not tribalism.

Speaking after a meeting with Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua in Kirinyaga, Gachagua rejected Ruto’s claims as insulting and baseless.

Gachagua pointed out that the Mt. Kenya region overwhelmingly supported Ruto in the last election despite his non-Kikuyu background, showing their willingness to back a national leader. He also mentioned that even Karua supported Raila Odinga, who is not a Kikuyu.

He attributed the waning support for Ruto in Mt. Kenya to the President’s perceived betrayal and deception, which Gachagua had warned him against. Gachagua said that the region’s shift in allegiance wasn’t motivated by tribalism but by Ruto’s actions, which alienated them.
Gachagua stated that the Mt. Kenya bloc is no longer under Ruto’s control, emphasizing that their support for Ruto over Agano Party’s Waihiga Mwaure in 2022 was evidence of their non-tribal stance. He also reassured the people of Mt. Kenya that their unity and integrity remain intact, highlighting their commitment to working with all Kenyans.
In response to growing discontent in the region following Gachagua’s impeachment and Ruto’s criticism, Gachagua reaffirmed the strength of the Mt. Kenya community and its ability to work with leaders across the country. He also praised ongoing unity efforts, including his collaboration with Karua, and expressed confidence that the region would not be isolated.
Ruto, however, criticized Gachagua on Friday, accusing him of incompetence during his tenure and accusing him and others of promoting tribalism and division.
