The Alshabaab group in Somalia has released a video of what they termed as a Kenyan military officer captured during El Adde war which led to dozens of Kenyan soldiers killed and hundreds of others critically injured.
In their Video shared, Abdullahi Issa Ibrahim, a Wajir-born Kenyan said to be a prisoner of war captured during the El Adde, Somalia attack in 2016, speaks out for the first time in eight years. He is urging the Kenyan government and citizens to facilitate his release so that he can reunite with his family in Kenya.
“I was born in Wajir county in 1963 and later joined the Kenya Defence Forces in 1986”.
In his continuity Abdullahi said he served in the 9th battalion based in Eldoret and came to Somalia just two weeks before his captivity by Terror group in Somalia.
The 2016 El Adde attack occurred on January 15, 2016, when a Somali militant group, Al-Shabaab, launched a devastating assault on a Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) base in El Adde, Somalia. The base was located in the Gedo region, in southern Somalia, and was part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which includes Kenyan troops deployed to combat Al-Shabaab.
The attack was a significant blow to the Kenyan military and AMISOM, as it highlighted vulnerabilities in the security of bases and exposed the challenges of countering al-Shabaab’s tactics in Somalia.
The militants claimed responsibility for the attack, which was part of their ongoing campaign to undermine AMISOM and the Somali government.
