Archbishop Muheria Advocates for Tax Relief To Ease Economic Challenges In Kenya

Nyeri Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria has urged the government to alleviate the financial burden on Kenyan citizens by reconsidering the existing tax regime.

In an interview marking the end of 2023, Muheria acknowledged the challenges faced by Kenyans, particularly with increased taxation and a high cost of living. He emphasized the need for prioritizing support for the vulnerable by addressing basic commodity costs and enhancing healthcare assistance.

Muheria expressed concern about the education system’s imbalance, emphasizing the importance of well-thought-out policies to ensure access to education for all. Reflecting on the economic challenges of the past year, he commended Kenyans for their innovation and resilience.

Muheria called for meaningful strategies to mitigate the rising cost of living, expressing hope for increased agricultural production and tourism income in 2024. Regarding national dialogue, he advocated for an inclusive discussion involving experts, opinion leaders, and faith leaders to create a broader consensus.

Muheria also celebrated Kenyan heroes and highlighted the importance of resilience among the people. However, he cautioned against gullibility and urged discernment to avoid tragedies like the Shakahola incident. Muheria emphasized the need for Kenyans to seek strategic solutions, work collaboratively, and take up economic initiatives for self-development.

He acknowledged the church’s role in addressing social issues and advocating for the economic well-being of ordinary Kenyans.
