Ruto Slams MPs Opposing Gov’t Plans But Missing Debates

A forceful President William Ruto criticized Members of Parliament who consistently oppose government proposals yet fail to participate in debates in the National Assembly.

Speaking at a church service in Kakamega County, Ruto recounted an incident where he introduced a bill in parliament to address challenges in the sugar sector, only to find that a certain MP, who had been publicly protesting the bill, was absent during the parliamentary debate.

Expressing his disapproval, Ruto highlighted the inconsistency of MPs who vocally oppose initiatives in public but fail to engage in the legislative process. He emphasized the importance of MPs being present during critical debates that affect their constituents, rather than simply opposing without offering solutions.

Ruto reiterated his government’s commitment to revamping the sugar sector in Kenya, emphasizing the intention to lease, rather than sell, sugar companies to improve profitability and reduce reliance on imported sugar. He also announced plans to introduce a bill in Parliament in June seeking a budget allocation of Ksh.3 billion for cane development in the sugar industry.

These remarks followed recent public statements by Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, who voiced concerns about the potential privatization of the Nzoia sugar factory during a rally attended by Ruto in Bungoma County, emphasizing local opposition to such plans.
