KRA Warns Kenyans Over Fake Housing Levy Notice

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has cautioned the public against a fake notice circulating online that claims taxpayers who fail to remit the housing levy will have their KRA PINs and bank accounts frozen.

KRA said the graphic, which uses the authority’s branding alongside the iTax logo, is not an official communication issued by the tax agency.

The authority urged taxpayers to ignore the notice and rely on its official communication channels for accurate information on taxes and other statutory obligations.

“Beware of fake news circulating online. KRA has not issued the information contained in this graphic,” the authority said.

KRA also advised taxpayers to verify tax-related information before taking action based on notices, messages or posts shared on social media and other online platforms.

The warning comes amid continued circulation of conflicting tax information online, which has generated mixed reactions among members of the public.

The tax agency urged anyone uncertain about their tax obligations or possible enforcement measures to confirm the information through its official channels.

The Housing Levy is a mandatory contribution introduced by the government to support the development of affordable housing and related infrastructure in Kenya.

Under the scheme, employees contribute 1.5 per cent of their gross monthly salary, with employers making a matching contribution of 1.5 per cent.

The funds are intended to support the government’s affordable housing programme, including the construction of housing units for eligible Kenyans.
