Ruto, Raila Convince MCAs to Drop Sakaja Impeachment

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has earned temporary reprieve after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) agreed to hold off their impeachment motion.

The decision followed two separate meetings in Nairobi, one chaired by ODM leader Raila Odinga with Azimio MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation offices, and another later at State House hosted by President William Ruto with UDA MCAs. Sakaja attended both sessions.

At Raila’s meeting, tension ran high as Azimio MCAs initially remained firm on removing the governor. ODM Nairobi branch chairperson and Makadara MP George Aladwa warned the legislators that defying the party leader could lead to disciplinary action, including losing the ODM ticket in 2027. Eventually, the majority agreed to suspend the plan for a month to give Sakaja time to act on their demands.

“We resolved to suspend the impeachment process after meeting our party leader. We shall review progress after one month,” Nairobi West MCA Rex Omolleh said.

He added that Raila acknowledged their concerns but advised against plunging the city into instability, noting it would hand the opposition a political advantage.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai confirmed they had accepted to step back, but only temporarily.

“We have given him one month to reform, otherwise the process will proceed,” he said.

South C MCA Abbas Khalif added that both coalitions had agreed to drop the motion and urged Sakaja to now focus on service delivery.

At State House, MCAs reportedly told the President they still wanted to exercise their oversight mandate, but Ruto appealed to them to allow dialogue. They agreed on condition that if their concerns remain unresolved after 60 days, they could revive the impeachment process.

Minority leaders further requested that Ruto convene a joint meeting between both camps to reach a binding agreement with the governor, with a possibility of such a session taking place tomorrow.

However, Assembly Speaker Ken Ng’ondi maintained that the matter is not officially settled, as consultations are ongoing.

“By the end of the week, we will confirm whether the impeachment has been dropped,” he said.

Governor Sakaja, for his part, pledged to address the grievances raised and to work with the MCAs to serve Nairobi residents effectively.
