Ruto Issues Warning to CS Murkomen Regarding Road Accidents

President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen concerning the increasing occurrences of road accidents in the nation.

Speaking during the launch of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Wednesday, President Ruto emphasized the urgent need to address the menace and curtail the rising number of accidents.

Looking ahead to the next year, President Ruto directed his message specifically to CS Murkomen, cautioning that tangible results in reducing accident numbers are expected, or else serious consequences will follow. He highlighted the concerning trend of escalating accident figures over the years and urged the CS and his team to take decisive action to reverse this trend.

President Ruto expressed confidence that achieving improved road safety is feasible, suggesting that the ministry can learn from successful approaches adopted in other jurisdictions. He also pledged his administration’s commitment to definitively resolving the persistent issue of road accidents in the country.

In response, CS Murkomen acknowledged the public frustration often directed at his office following road accidents. However, he stressed that ultimate responsibility lies with road users, particularly drivers and riders, who exert significant control over accident prevention.

Murkomen emphasized the importance of engaging all stakeholders within the transport sector to ensure collective accountability in addressing road safety concerns.
