The victims included a 45-year-old man, his wife, and their seven children—one of whom was a high school candidate and another just six months old. Four of the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
Authorities suspect the fire was intentionally set, possibly due to a long-standing land dispute involving the family. The blaze broke out after midnight, completely destroying the house and all belongings inside.
Police have arrested a female suspect linked to the land row, who was reportedly found with a jerrican believed to contain petrol. Witnesses claimed the attackers locked the doors from the outside before setting the house on fire.
Investigators say the arson may have been timed to coincide with a planned eviction order scheduled for Thursday. Tensions remain high in the area, with police increasing security after enraged locals torched the suspect’s home in retaliation.
This tragic event follows a similar case last week in Masimba, Kisii County, where five family members were also killed in an arson attack. Police say they are actively pursuing suspects in both cases.
