Quiver, O.J Club, Al Fakher Among 107 Joints NEMA Targets for Closure

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has listed 107 entertainment joints across Kenya that risk being shut down for excessive noise.

In a notice issued yesterday, the regulator said it has received numerous complaints from the public about loud music in clubs, bars, lounges, and restaurants. The crackdown is aimed at reducing noise pollution, particularly in urban centres such as Nairobi and Mombasa, where noise-related grievances have risen by 15% in the past year.

According to NEMA, most of the establishments had already been issued with Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to submit compliance documents, but many failed to meet the requirements.

“Several facilities were directed to provide environmental compliance documentation, but the majority have not complied,” the notice stated.

Among the high-profile spots on the list are 1824, Paris Lounge, Havana Lounge (Northern Bypass), Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru, Quiver Lounge (Eastlands and Kilimani), Al Fakher, Bar Next Door, Kettle House, Ibury Lounge, Airport Club, O.J. Club Ruiru, and Club Ibiza.

Restaurants have also been flagged, including Alaska Lounge and Grill, Funcity Hotel, Mchana Restaurant, Kijito Gardens, and Mamba Village.

NEMA has given all the affected establishments seven days to present key documents, including a certificate of incorporation, list of directors, Environmental Impact Assessment license, latest Environmental Audit report, proof of noise control measures, and written justification for why they should not face sanctions.

Failure to comply, the authority warned, will result in prosecution, closure, or other legal action.

The crackdown coincides with preparations for World Cleanup Day 2025, during which NEMA is also intensifying campaigns against textile waste and other environmental threats.

Operators must submit the required documentation to NEMA’s Nairobi headquarters within the set deadline or risk immediate enforcement action.
