Marburg Outbreak: Kenya Takes Precautionary Measures

Kenya’s Director-General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth has said the nation is on high alert after a suspected Marburg disease was detected in neighboring Tanzania.

An outbreak of the virus has been reported in the Kagera region in northwestern Tanzania, where eight people have reportedly died after contracting the virus.

Amoth said that due to Kagera’s proximity to the city of Migori in western Kenya, the government has taken emergency measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Today we received communication from the WHO regarding the outbreak of Marburg disease in the nation of Tanzania and due to the proximity of our areas we are also at risk,” Amoth said.

He further added that Kenya has put in place strategies to combat the virus, including strengthening surveillance efforts to prevent and control transmission.
