Principals Put on Notice Over Grade 9 Registration

KNEC has advised school heads nationwide to register Grade 9 learners early for the 2026 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), warning that delays could interfere with planning and Senior School placement.

The council emphasized that KJSEA, administered at the end of Junior School under the Competency-Based Education framework, is compulsory and crucial in assessing learners’ competencies and determining their transition to Senior School.

The registration window opened on March 2 and will close on March 31, 2026, shortly after the start of KPSEA and KCSE registration exercises.

In a notice to principals, KNEC urged them not to postpone the process, encouraging immediate registration through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal.

To complete the process, school heads must log into the portal using their centre codes, update their personal details, verify via a one-time code sent to their phone, and proceed to the Registration & SBAs section to enroll candidates.

Meanwhile, KPSEA registration will end on March 16, while KCSE registration closes on March 31.

The council’s call comes after past challenges with late entries. In 2025, KNEC received 5,743 late KCSE registration requests after the portal had already been closed, with some schools only declaring unregistered learners following pressure from parents and media.

KNEC CEO David Njengere stressed that accurate and timely registration is essential in national examination planning, warning that errors such as incorrect gender details could result in learners being placed in the wrong schools.

He urged school administrators, parents, and guardians to collaborate closely to ensure learners’ information is correctly captured within the set timelines to prevent unnecessary disruptions.
