President Ruto to Attend 9th Edition of Turkana’s Tobong’u Lore Festival

President William Ruto is set to attend the 9th annual Tobong’u Lore festival in Turkana, a cultural celebration whose name means “welcoming back home” in the Turkana language.

The festival has grown into one of Kenya’s major cultural events, attracting communities from across the country and East Africa to celebrate traditional knowledge, livelihoods, and the rich heritage of the Turkana people.

Ruto’s presence is expected to elevate the festival’s national profile, highlighting the government’s support for cultural heritage as a driver of social cohesion, tourism, and economic growth. State House officials said the President will also use the occasion to reaffirm government backing for marginalized regions and the creative economy.

The festival features traditional dances, songs, poetry, storytelling, and cuisine, while offering a space for intergenerational dialogue. Modern elements such as exhibitions, policy forums, and cultural exchanges have also been incorporated to connect tradition with contemporary development needs.

Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai welcomed the President’s visit, saying the festival allows Turkana to “tell its story in its own voice” and boosts local businesses while promoting cultural tourism. Traders, hoteliers, and transport operators have reported increased business ahead of Ruto’s arrival.

Beyond cultural celebrations, Tobong’u Lore serves as a platform to address pastoralist issues, including climate change, livestock markets, peace-building, and cross-border cooperation. This year’s edition will also focus on youth empowerment and the preservation of indigenous languages.

On the sidelines of the festival, Ruto is expected to meet local leaders and community representatives to discuss ongoing development projects in Turkana, including roads, water, energy, and education initiatives.

Turkana County Trade, Gender, and Tourism CEC James Longole Wangiros said the festival is an important avenue for promoting trade, tourism, and economic empowerment, while Culture, Arts and Heritage Director Boniface Korobe highlighted the significance of the opening rituals, symbolizing unity, peace, and spiritual readiness.
