Activist to Camp at Tyaa Bridge Until Illegal Sand Harvesting Stops

Kitui County-based environmental activist Musili Kauta has announced plans to stage a continuous protest at Tyaa Bridge in Mwingi Town starting Sunday, January 4, 2026, in a bid to stop illegal sand harvesting in the county’s rivers.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Kauta said he will camp, sleep, and live at the bridge until lorries associated with Mulyungi and Kalungu are fully removed from the Kitui and Mwingi rivers.

The activist described the occupation as a peaceful demonstration aimed at halting river degradation and environmental destruction allegedly occurring under the protection of powerful individuals.

“The continued exploitation of Kitui’s rivers is a direct threat to the environment, community water sources, and the future of our county,” the notice reads.

The activist urged residents, environmental defenders, and stakeholders to support the movement and stand firm in protecting the county’s natural resources.

This protest comes amid growing concerns over environmental degradation and illegal sand harvesting in parts of Kitui County, which have been blamed for soil erosion, river pollution, and reduced water availability for communities.

Environmental authorities and local leaders have yet to comment on the upcoming demonstration.
