A woman died and her husband was seriously injured after a bedbug extermination attempt went tragically wrong at Daraja Mbili Market, Kisii Town.
According to police and witnesses, the man lit a fire lighter to kill bedbugs in their apartment on September 8, 2025, sparking a gas cylinder explosion that engulfed their third-floor house in flames.

The victim, identified as 35-year-old Esther Cathrene, was burnt beyond recognition, while her husband sustained severe burns and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Their house help managed to escape unhurt and later told police the fire broke out as the husband tried to burn bedbugs.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze, but most household property was destroyed. The body was moved to the mortuary for autopsy as investigators examined the scene.
In a separate incident in Karuri, Kiambu County, 25-year-old Michael Kinyanjui was found burnt beyond recognition in his house after a fire whose cause remains unknown. Neighbours said they spotted the iron-sheet house ablaze but were unable to save him. His body was taken to the mortuary as police launched investigations.
