Former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been released on parole from a South African prison, nearly 11 years after the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Officials confirmed Pistorius’s release on Friday, having served half of his more than 13-year sentence. While Ms. Steenkamp’s mother expressed acceptance of the decision, she emphasized her family’s enduring emotional struggle, stating they are the ones “serving a life sentence.”
Pistorius, who claimed to have mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar, was convicted of murder in 2015 after an appeal court overturned a previous verdict of culpable homicide. As part of his parole conditions until 2029, he faces strict terms, including restrictions on media communication.
June Steenkamp welcomed the imposed conditions but questioned the justice served for Reeva. Pistorius, a double amputee known as the “blade runner,” had a successful athletic career before the high-profile murder case unfolded.
