Kylian Mbappe, the French striker, has reportedly forgone “several tens of millions” of euros to facilitate a potential exit from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), according to a source involved in the negotiations. As per an agreement reached with the club last summer, Mbappe waived bonuses totaling approximately 60 to 70 million euros ($65.6 million to $76.6 million), thereby providing financial relief for the club in anticipation of his likely departure when his contract concludes in June.
Since the opening of the transfer window on Monday, Mbappe has been free to sign with any club.
While French daily Le Parisien mentions an 80 million euro ‘loyalty’ bonus that Mbappe was supposed to receive last September, along with other bonuses totaling 100 million euros, the source close to the negotiations denies these figures.
Mbappe, commenting on the situation after PSG’s Champions Trophy victory on Wednesday, stated, “With the agreement I reached with the president this summer, whatever my decision, we managed to protect all parties and preserve the club’s peace of mind for the challenges to come – that’s the most important thing.”
The agreement ensures that PSG is covered if Mbappe, who has not yet confirmed his future decision, departs without a transfer fee.
Le Parisien reports that Mbappe’s 2022 contract secured him a yearly salary of 72 million euros, a signing bonus of 150 million euros, and a loyalty bonus that increased from 70 million euros in the first year to 90 million in the third year.
By remaining in Paris until June without extending his contract further, Mbappe could have received a payment exceeding 200 million euros. If he joins another club in the summer without a transfer fee, he would likely be compensated with a substantial signing-on fee.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from Mbappe’s circle when contacted by an international media, and PSG has declined to comment.
