Formula One Returns to Africa After 30 Years as Rwanda Secures 10-Year Deal

Rwanda is set to bring Formula One racing back to Africa after more than 30 years, following a 10-year agreement to host a Grand Prix from the early 2030s.

Formula One announced on Tuesday that the race would take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, southeast of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali.

Reports by Reuters and the Associated Press indicate that the new track is expected to be completed in the early 2030s, although organisers have yet to confirm the date of the first race.

Africa last hosted a Formula One Grand Prix in 1993, when South Africa staged the event at the Kyalami circuit near Johannesburg.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame welcomed the agreement, describing it as a significant achievement for Africa and motorsport enthusiasts across the continent.

Speaking during an event in Kigali, Kagame expressed optimism that Rwanda’s hosting rights could pave the way for additional Formula One races in Africa.

The deal also advances a long-standing ambition of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has repeatedly advocated for Formula One to return to the continent.

Hamilton, 41, who remains the sport’s only Black driver, has previously revealed that he has spent years working behind the scenes to help bring a Grand Prix to Africa.

Formula One president and chief executive Stefano Domenicali described the announcement as a historic development, noting that Rwanda’s inclusion would allow the championship to race on every inhabited continent.

“Today is a landmark moment for Formula 1,” Domenicali said, highlighting the importance of establishing a lasting partnership with Rwanda.

He added that returning to Africa had long been part of the championship’s ambitions, with organisers seeking a sustainable arrangement supported by a clear long-term vision.

Rwanda Strengthens Its Position as a Sporting Destination

Rwanda has increasingly used major international sporting competitions to enhance its global reputation, attract tourists and encourage investment.

In 2025, the country hosted the UCI Road World Championships, becoming the first African nation to stage the prestigious cycling competition.

Securing a Formula One Grand Prix represents another significant step in Rwanda’s efforts to attract high-profile sporting events.

The agreement is expected to raise the country’s international visibility and strengthen its ambitions to become a leading destination for global sports and tourism.

The planned race will also mark a major milestone for African motorsport fans, who have waited more than three decades for Formula One to return to the continent.
