No More Blackouts in Ukambani as New Kitui–Wote Line Energised

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) has successfully energised the 132kV Kitui–Wote transmission line, marking a major milestone in improving electricity reliability across Makueni, Kitui, and Garissa counties.

The line was officially activated on Friday at 11:00 AM, enhancing grid stability in the Eastern region. The new connection is expected to boost network resilience by creating dual supply routes and improving overall load distribution.

Currently, up to 20MW flows from Kitui to Wote, with an additional 18MW from Wote to Sultan Hamud, reducing strain on existing infrastructure. The project introduces two supply sources, from Wote and Kindaruma, enabling an N-1 contingency — a technical standard ensuring the grid continues to function even if a major component fails.

In practical terms, if supply from Wote is interrupted, power can automatically be rerouted from Kindaruma, preventing outages. Shem Konga, Ketraco’s Eastern Regional Engineer, emphasized that the line is crucial for maintaining continuous supply in the region.

The new line also eases pressure on the 132kV Kindaruma–Mwingi line, previously a key source for Garissa and surrounding areas. With the Kitui–Wote link live, Garissa is no longer solely reliant on Kindaruma, reducing operational risk while meeting rising demand.

Beyond resilience, the project supports Ketraco’s national goal of connecting all 47 counties to the grid by 2030. Dual lines in strategic corridors ensure alternative flow paths, limiting disruption during maintenance or outages.

Under its 20-year master plan, Ketraco aims to add 8,000km of transmission lines and nearly 15,000MVA of transformation capacity, reflecting Kenya’s push to modernize its power infrastructure for universal access and stronger support for industry, agriculture, and commerce.

With the Kitui–Wote line now operational, residents and businesses across Ukambani and Garissa can expect improved electricity quality and reliability, a timely boost for the region’s rapid growth.
